In 2021, the Indian government implemented the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules. These rules require companies to not only remove content deemed illegal or likely to disrupt public order but also to provide users' information to law enforcement upon request. Although some provisions of these new rules have been contested, the Indian government continues to routinely filter online content—especially content expressing negative sentiments toward the state—including entire social media channels, blogs, and news websites.
